Healthy Vision Women’s Report
Healthy vision, according to several medical professionals, is of greater importance to women than men. As women age, they become more prone than men to vision issues, and this would even include blindness – these are the latest findings according to a report released by the National Women’s Health Resource Center: Women and Healthy Vision. Fortunately there are ways to keep your eyes healthy. How about these ideas?
Tips On Preserving Healthy Vision
Smoking Effects Healthy Vision: Quit smoking NOW! Non-smokers are not as susceptible as smokers would be to the dangerous condition called age-related macular degeneration, or AMD for short. And AMD happens to be the most common cause of blindness for people over the age of 65. While there are some ways to slow its progression, there is no cure.
The Sun Effects Healthy Vision: When staying underneath the sun for protracted periods of time, wear both a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. These two simple steps can reduce your exposure to eye-damaging UV rays up to 18-fold. Your eye care specialist might be able to help by prescribing contacts with UV protection if you happen to wear them.
Weight Gain Effects Healthy Vision: Be wary of your weight. Many people, women included, who are overweight are more prone to Type 2 diabetes than those who are not. Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in those under 65. According to the Harvard Medical School’s Nurses’ health study, overweight or obese women are over a third more susceptible to cataracts than those of average size.
Omega-3 Can Help Healthy Vision: Take fish oil supplements daily, or eat fish two or three times a week. There is some tangible proof that omega-3 fatty acids found in fish and other products can help reduce the chances of AMD. On the flip side of things, you will want to reduce the amount of vegetable oil.
Healthy Vision And Foods
A Fruity Diet Can Aid Healthy Vision: Make it a point to eat fruit thrice or more a day. Compared to average women who eat 1.5 servings of fruit a day or less, women who eat twice that amount or more are 36 percent less susceptible to AMD.
Dark Green Leafy Veggies Aid Healthy Vision: Hey Olive, eat your spinach! What Popeye didn’t know was that spinach is a rich source of lutein and zea-xanthin, powerful antioxidants that can reduce the risk of certain eye diseases, like AMD. You may also want to increase your green veg intake (collards, kale, etc.), or eat more eggs and oranges to reduce chances of AMD. Give your trusted eye care professional a visit at least once every two years for a thorough examination. Go more often if you have diabetes or any other eye-related condition.
Exercise Aids Healthy Vision: Take a brisk walk daily. In one study, glaucoma patients who walked briskly four times per week for 40 minutes lowered the pressure within their eyes enough so they could stop taking their glaucoma medication.
Contaminated Makeup Prevents Healthy Vision: Change your eye makeup every three to six months. Bacteria can easily contaminate makeup and if not replaced regularly, could lead to eye infection. Don’t fall asleep in your daily wear contact lenses. They’re called daily wear for a good reason, after all.
